Vascular access expert joins Vygon UK to strengthen its clinical offering to the NHS

David Wynne brings unparalleled expertise in vascular access and clinical education to his new role

A commitment to improving patient care and saving more lives through innovative medical device technology has prompted Vygon UK to appoint former NHS professional David Wynne to its Clinical Nurse Education team.

With nearly two decades of hands-on experience in nursing and vascular access, David has joined the leading provider of intravenous access devices to the NHS to focus on strengthening its clinical offering. He will collaborate with hospital trusts across the country to enhance the use of new Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs), midlines, and ECG systems.

David’s experience includes establishing and leading a specialist vascular access service at Wirral University Teaching Hospital. Starting with just an ultrasound scanner, he built a team of nine nurses, transforming vascular access services and managing thousands of PICC and cannula insertions annually. This achievement highlights his expertise in creating and managing services that directly address healthcare challenges.

His deep knowledge of Vygon’s pilotTLS™ technology – a system he has personally used for a decade – uniquely positions him to support hospitals in enhancing patient care.

David notes: “Unlike traditional x-ray methods, the pilotTLS™ allows precise PICC tip placement, which is essential for optimal patient outcomes. It makes the procedure quicker and less traumatic for patients, ensuring both clinical effectiveness and patient comfort. Plus, by eliminating the need for post-procedure placement x-rays, it also alleviates pressure on radiology departments.”

Cost savings are another significant advantage of pilotTLS™. Each procedure costs just £16.72 compared to more than £65 for x-ray methods, presenting substantial financial benefits for the NHS during times of budgetary strain. David’s expertise in implementing this system will empower healthcare providers to unlock these efficiencies, while improving patient care.

In addition to his clinical knowledge, David’s passion for education will play a vital role in his new position. His work will include training healthcare professionals, sharing best practices, and assisting hospitals in establishing or enhancing vascular access services.

“David’s appointment is a game-changer for Vygon,” says Francesca Briers, National Sales Manager at Vygon UK. “His complexity of knowledge in vascular access and his proficiency with pilotTLS™ technology will ensure we continue to deliver unmatched value to our customers.”

David obtained a diploma in nursing in the early 2000s. He spent six years in a renal dialysis unit before transitioning to vascular access in 2011.

He adds: “This role is an incredible opportunity to take on a new challenge, support other healthcare professionals, and make a tangible difference to patients’ lives. I’m particularly excited to share my experience and help hospitals unlock the full potential of cutting-edge technologies like pilotTLS™. Education and collaboration have always been central to my work, and I’m looking forward to working alongside the fantastic team at Vygon to drive improvements in clinical practice and patient outcomes.”
