This month saw the launch of Vygon’s answer to easy midline insertion. smartmidline™ is a CT-rated midline (up to 325psi and 7ml/s*) that utilises the industry recognised Seldinger Technique for easy and quick placement.

This month saw the launch of Vygon’s answer to easy midline insertion. smartmidline™ is a CT-rated midline (up to 325psi and 7ml/s*) that utilises the industry recognised Seldinger Technique for easy and quick placement. Further positioned as being suitable for all patients, this new midline comes in a range of different sizes (from 2 to 5Fr and 4 to 25cm). One of the biggest benefits to this product is its inclusion of an integrated extension line, a concept that is designed to keep manipulation away from the site of the insertion site and therefore reducing the risk of infection.

Midline catheters offer an alternative to peripheral and central venous access providing vascular access in a larger peripheral vein without entering central venous circulation. One of the main benefits to providing vascular access in this way to the patient is ensuring less frequent resisting of the catheter, which in turn will reduce associated venous trauma. Further to this, those patients with poor peripheral venous access, and when the use of a CVC is contraindicated, midlines provide an easier alternative to insertion at the antecubital fossa.
