Infection Protection Device Now on Sale Direct to Patients at Home

Patients returning home from hospital with long-term catheters, or receiving intravenous treatment can now buy a vital disinfection device - a Curos Port Protector - online.

Vygon (UK) Ltd, the UK subsidiary of the specialist single-use medical devices group, today announces that patients returning home from hospital with long-term catheters or receiving intravenous treatment can now buy online a disposable disinfection device, Curos Port Protector.

This is the first time that Curos Port Protector, distributed by Vygon (UK) Ltd, is being sold direct to patients in the UK. Users have already pre-ordered the product online.

Curos Port Protector (http://www.disinfectingcap.co.uk/) is a unique disposable, passive disinfection device. Studies have shown it reduces Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSI) and Catheter Related Bloodstream Infections (CRBSI) in hospitals. Its effectiveness was tested in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida glabrata.

The device has an integrated, disinfecting pad impregnated with 70% isopropyl alcohol, which cleans the IV or catheter access port, killing bacteria in three minutes – and providing ongoing protection for up to seven days.

“Curos Port Protectors are a proven way of reducing infection risk for those patients who continue to receive treatment at home through intravenous needle-free devices and catheters,” said Brett Hughes, Homecare Manager at Vygon (UK) Ltd. “A patient’s home is not as well-equipped as a hospital, Curos helps meet the challenges faced in providing quality healthcare in a domestic environment.”

Some patients who use needle-free devices at home try to protect the end of the device themselves by using gauze and tape. With Curos Port Protectors, they can use a proven and recommended medical device to minimise the risk of infection safely.

“Having the facility to buy Curos online should make life a little easier for patients and their families and will free up valuable time and resources in hospitals and community healthcare,” said Mr Hughes. “The benefits of this new service are twofold. Curos gives the patient protection from infection while at home and supports the healthcare professionals who are providing post-operative and on-going care and support in the community.”

Curos Port Protectors are now available in packs of 30 for £18.
