Howard Paces Himself for Sport Relief

Swindon Facilities Manager Howard Hollister is preparing to step up to the Sport Relief challenge – and colleagues will be hot on his heels to help raise funds for the national charity.

Howard will be striding out on his daily ‘Walk around Work,’ but on Friday 21st March, staff will be guessing how many paces he takes that day, to raise money for Sport Relief.

As Facilities Manager Howard heads an eight-strong team that maintains the building, equipment and 22 acres of grounds at Vygon (UK) Ltd- a leading supplier of medical and surgical products. He spends up to 12 hours a day walking the corridors, grounds and floors of the company’s HQ in Latham Road.

On Sport Relief Friday Howard will wear a pedometer to monitor and count his every step and staff will pay £1 each to guess how many paces he takes. The person who guesses nearest to his final tally will win a delicious three-course Sunday lunch for two, donated by Cricklade House.

Howard, who has worked for Vygon (UK) Ltd for the past 27 years, said:

“I do have an office, but I rarely sit down for more than an hour a day and I start at 6.30am and am often here until gone 6pm. It’s a very active job, you’re always walking from one place to another, supervising the team, dealing with sub-contractors, checking equipment and managing any issues.”

The sprawling Vygon (UK) Ltd premises at The Pierre Simonet Building, V Park, Gateway North, includes a basement, two storeys with a lift, a gym, warehouse, offices and restaurant, plus spacious grounds and a large car park.

Howard, who has previously run half marathons and 10km routes for charity, said: “This is a much larger building than our last premises in Cirencester, so it will be interesting to see how far I walk in a day. I just hope we raise plenty of money for Sport Relief!”

As part of the Sport Relief fun, staff are also staging a raffle, with prizes donated by local businesses. These include 18 holes of golf for two players at South Cerney Golf Club; A Spa voucher for £60.00 at Beauty Source Spa at Cricklade House and a two week, family pass to Swindon’s David Lloyd Leisure Club.
